Many things are not fun. That is a fact.
Trying to make not-fun things fun is a natural human response.
But some things should not be fun.
I am that person who is always trying to make not-fun things fun. I don’t have a lot of friends. There may be a correlation.
Anyway. Here is how to make things fun that should not be fun.
Parties. I do not care what you say, parties are not fun. Wearing costumes to parties where people are not wearing costumes sounds like it might make it more fun. I can assure you it does not. It makes you that person in a bunny suit in the corner at a party. It is not fun.
Meetings. You can add all sorts of fun activities to a meeting that everyone will hate. They will pretend not to hate them because their boss is on the call, while they have to answer questions like what their favorite thing to grill is or what their stripper name is, but they will hate it. Adding fun activities does not make a meeting fun; it makes a meeting long. A long meeting is not fun. I have learned this.
Visiting someone in the hospital who is dying. You could make this fun. You could put on a funny hat. But does the dying person want you to wear a hat, or do they want to talk about dying? I don’t know. I have never been dying. I wear a lot of hats though.
A long bike ride. Some might argue that a bike ride is fun. I disagree. I wore a tutu on a long bike ride once to make it more fun. It caused chafing and made me look like a sad person riding a bicycle very slowly in a tutu. That memory is not fun.
A colonoscopy. I tried to make this fun. Well. I didn’t, really. I just made the best of it.
Sometimes things are just not supposed to be fun.

Thank you, Sam Liberty, whose title I stole and whose article I didn’t read until I finished mine. The World Bank hires him to make things fun. I wore a bunny suit to a party. Any similarities are purely coincidental. Read his article here.
