How Does Worldview Shape Your Leadership?

A great leader is like a great chef. They can create their own recipes by combining very different ingredients together in a way that makes something unique and wonderful. They know that each ingredient is different but important in its own way. For some, you need a lot, and for others, just a touch will change the whole dish.

A great chef understands that not everyone will enjoy everything, so you need to make adjustments if you have a specific customer in mind. Otherwise, you get creative and experiment until you get it just right.

And each culture has different traditions – it may take some time to adjust the tastebuds to something new. A great chef, like Anthony Bourdain, knew that the more you can taste and experience, the better at it you become and the deeper your understanding gets.

Two different chefs will take the same ingredients and make something totally different with them. Each one has a style their own recipes that have been developed over generations.

Do you see where I’m going here? Our worldviews are formed from a recipe created by our values and the environment that created them, and this is how we interact with the world and act as leaders.

Here’s a recipe for mine.

Morgan’s Worldview Casserole Recipe

Ingredients (Values)

  • 6 cups Creativity, scrambled
  • 4 liters Empathy
  • 1 can humility
  • 2 T genuineness
  • 1 T Openmindedness, with benefit of the doubt
  • 1.5 t Unconventionality
  • Dash of Humor
  • Pinch of Adventure

Cooking Instructions

Mix ingredients together in a large bowl. Let it sit for several years doing nothing. Listen, is it making any noises? Be curious, what could it turn into? How can you make it better? Keep listening. Think about it some more – what’s it doing now?  Let it marinate some more, it will develop a great flavor eventually. No need to pray; just check occasionally and use your instincts to know when it’s time.

Put it under pressure. Watch carefully – when it begins to rise, reduce heat to medium.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm. Consume to become the kind of leader who does things their own way, leads with their gut, and has fun doing it.

Adjust seasoning to taste, then share with your friends.

This one was a real struggle for me, and this is a complete re-do of the original. It felt more vulnerable to post this initial draft than it did many of the other much more ‘personal’ essays, and I was left feeling very exposed. There’s also a part of me that feels like my privileged perspective doesn’t deserve to be written about, that to write about it somehow makes it seem like I think I am important. I was so hung up on the baggage I felt related to this assignment that I had trouble coming away from it with a clear perspective on my worldview. So when I thought about writing it again, I liked the idea of being very clear about the values, how they were put together and what the result was. Sounds like a recipe to me. I’ll post the original as well, but know it makes me feel like I’m standing naked in the supermarket. https://morganmelto.com/2022/07/21/a-worldview-story/

This is really fun and I love that it ties to your food theme. :) I hope you will keep both essays and perhaps keep revisiting this question and looking at it from different perspectives. Each essay you have written taps into a different source / frame and each is therefore really powerful.
